Cycling Oman - the quiet jewel of the Middle East

When the opportunity arose for Donalrey Nieva and Karen Yung to ride bikes in Oman with Haute Route, they were immediately curious. Although both of them had ridden in many “far flung” destinations around the world - from Sri Lanka and Mt. Fuji to Capetown and Peru - they had never pedaled in the Middle East, much less spent time there aside from a few hours on a flight layover. They packed their bags and took off in early March, just before most of the world as we know it would change irrevocably due to the coronavirus.

The trip proved to be not only a remarkable and challenging riding experience, but also a beautiful introduction to a country that has so much to offer as a burgeoning cycling destination—dreamy desert landscapes punctuated with massive jebels (mountains) to satisfy any masochistic climber's fantasy (especially if that fantasy involves sustained steep gradients); curious and friendly locals who are eager to embrace and advance cycling in their country; and the best hospitality through the Omani tradition of coffee steeped with cardamom and rosewater, accompanied by fresh dates. Now to return again to explore some of the off-road the country has to offer...
